With fish roast leaves, it is possible to prepare several medicinal recipes. For example, this plant can be used as a tea to treat respiratory problems such as flu and bronchitis.
In fact, this therapeutic use left common sense and started to be recognized by health units in Brazil. Currently, Vernonia polyanthes Less , the herb’s scientific name, is part of the List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System (RENISUS). ( 1 , 2 )
Also known as whitefish roast, blood stake and weft, this plant is used to make a tea for oral and topical use. This is because, in addition to its bronchodilator property, it is also considered to be antihypertensive, diuretic and anti-inflammatory .
Benefits of fish roasting
treats respiratory problems
Considered a weed for many, it roasts fish surprisingly for the benefits it has, among them the most important: fighting respiratory diseases.
As it is a bronchodilator, it is able to promote the dilation of the bronchi, allowing the passage of air in a natural way. This action is extremely important in patients who suffer from asthma , for example.
When an irritant enters the bronchi of an asthmatic, the body has an “overreaction” to eliminate the invader.
The very action of expelling the foreign body begins to harm the patient, promoting a series of common symptoms in asthma, such as coughing , shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, etc. And that’s when the herb kicks in, attenuating the body’s natural response.
Helps control blood pressure
The control of blood pressure promoted by Vernonia polyanthes L. is directly related to the diuretic effect that the plant has.
According to a study carried out in São Paulo, by Unicamp and Unesp, the fish roast has hypotensive and natridiuétric activity. This is because, the infusion of the leaves of this herb resulted in an increase in urinary flow and in the amount of excreted sodium. Consequently, drinking causes a significant drop in blood pressure.
The São Paulo study used anesthetized rats for the tests. In the tests, the animals were submitted to oral administration of 1 ml of the infusion, resulting in an increase of up to 160% in urinary flow and 120% in renal sodium excretion. ( 3 )
However, before starting this type of treatment, it is important to talk to your doctor. As hypertensive patients already use controlled drugs, it is necessary to know from the health professional if it is possible to use the plant as an addition to the treatment.
This herb can also be used to fight external and internal inflammation. For example, another Brazilian study, this time carried out in Juiz de Fora, shows that the species can be applied in the treatment of skin wounds, promoting healing . ( 4 )
As in the case of asthma, fish roasts also prevent inflammation caused by the body that are attempts to combat rheumatic diseases. In this way, the weed lessens the feeling of pain common in these problems.
How to make and use tea?
There is only one way to make fish roast tea, but there are two different ways to use it. How it is used depends on the type of problem you want to fight.
- 1 tablespoon of the fish roast leaves (or 3 grams)
- 150 ml of water (or a cup of tea).
First, bring the water to a boil. Once it is in a boiling state, turn off the heat and add the plant. Leave the container capped for 10 minutes.
After that time, strain the infusion and use it according to your needs. For example, if you want to treat your breathing problems, you can use the tea orally, gargling and then drinking 1 cup three times a day.
Now, if the treatment to be followed involves muscle pain, then it is recommended to use the infusion topically. To do this, apply a cloth soaked with tea to the affected area twice a day, for 2 hours each application. ( 2 )
If you want to use it as a healing agent, the work produced in Juiz de Fora confirms its popular use. ( 4 ) To do this, use the plaster or juice from this infusion over the wounds.
Does fish roast tea lose weight?
As this infusion has a diuretic action, and therefore reduces fluid retention, it is common for people to associate it with a natural slimming agent. However, there are still no studies that can prove the tea of this species contributes to weight loss.
According to the List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System, the plant should not be used during pregnancy and lactation. ( 2 ) It is also not recommended to use fish roasting and its tea in young children.
In addition, it is noteworthy that this natural remedy cannot replace the drugs prescribed by doctors, especially in cases of hypertension. As already mentioned, in this situation it is recommended to seek the opinion of a professional.
