The Early Bigi cherry variety is a French variety from Pierre Argot . Its origin is an unknown varietal crossing. This variety of cherry is also known by the name Bigi Sol . Consulted sources date its date of obtaining in 1999. It is a variety registered “recently”, being necessary to have authorization for its multiplication.

Curiosities: The name is a conjunction of the English words Early (Early) and Bigi (Big = Big). In areas with little probability of rain it is being introduced to replace Burlat.

Characteristics of the Early Bigi Cherry

Flowering : The Early Bigi cherry is self- sterile and  early-flowering  (it blooms during the last week of March). Bigi Sol, belongs to Group XVIII (S 1 S 9 ) of pollinators. Among others, New Star (Group II), Staccato (Group III) and Garnet (IX) can be used as pollinating varieties .

Productivity : Its productivity is medium, similar to Burlat.

Vigor and bearing of the tree : The Early Bigi cherry tree is open or expanded. Easy to form.

Cold hours:  A study carried out by IMIDA shows Bigi Sol cold needs of  571 hours  below  7ºC, equivalent to  934 Cold Units  according to the Richardson method (Utah).

Agronomic characterization of the Early Bigi cherry

It does not release the peduncle .

Positive aspects : Very early variety. Thick and firm size.

Negative aspects : Sensitivity to cracking.

The productive capacities of cherry varieties are influenced by both climatic and agronomic factors. Some aspects of consideration are the climate, soil characteristics, altitude, fertilizers made, tree load, rootstock , phytosanitary treatments, existence of viruses, fungi, bacteria, nematodes or other pathologies, pruning carried out, date of collection, frames of the plantation, etc.

To plant cherry trees, it is essential to know the behavior of cherry varieties. Make a study of the different possibilities and their economic viability. Finding professional advice from farmers, engineers or technicians will be a good starting point before saying the varieties to include in our plantation.
